In Nagarjunakonda |
Nagarjunakonda was one of the greatest places of Buddhist learning. Nagarjunakonda is located on the banks of River Krishna at a distance of 65 kilometers from Vijayawada. Here the Stupas have exquisite sculptures portraying scenes from the life of Buddha. The main stupa is known as the Mahachaitya and contains the sanctified small tooth and an earring of the Buddha. The main attractions of the city are the remains of the stupas, chaityas, viharas and mandapas along with white marble carvings and sculptures rendering the life of the Buddha. The stupa is adorned with a big garland-ornament. The Great Stupa is 32.3 meters in diameter, 18 meters high and 4 meters wide. In the plan, the stupa appears as a cartwheel with its hub, felly and spokes. |
